July 2 1776

Does anyone know the significance of this date, and why John Adams thought July 2, rather than July 4, would be remembered forever? I didn't either, so the exhibit at the Mass Historical Society intrigued me. I finally made it down there just before the exhibit closed. July 2 is the day that the Declaration of Independence was approved by Congress and July 4 was the day it was signed by John Hancock and the secretary in the Congress. Many of the others didn't sign it until months later b/c it was treason and they could be put to death.

The other exhibit they had was about the war of 1812, specifically how it related to Massachusetts with a focus on the Navy. Some of the New England states were so opposed to the war that they almost seceded (almost 50 years before some Southern States did secede because of slavery). It was an interesting exhibit.

I love cannon, so take a picture of them wherever they show up.

I had to read a book about the war of 1812 because I could not understand why it happened. The exhibits were interesting.
